cashed it in for mirages and daily routine
glamorous treadmills called the american dream
glass bottles, broken wedding rings
we drag our feet and stand on platforms
whisper love and curse the storm
discrimination still runs through our veins
our hearts pump racism and it leaves a stain
at least it looks nice with the blue and white
how pretty our weapons look in stars and stripes
look down on those who wrap their heads
but we wrap our greed in imported threads
we'll build fences of hatred and walls of fear
justice closes her eyes and liberty plugs her ears
we're killing our tomorrows and griping about our todays
we want the world around us to change while we keep to our old ways
we fight war with war and no one wins
we satisfy our middle-class white appetites, unaware of our sins
we all race our two-party, one-track minds
for a better way to improve fortress america, leaving our neighbors outside
hope has been hiding in the bomb shelters of our hearts
ready to spread once we find a way to start
